I’m proud to serve as the tumuaki (principal) of our beautiful kura.
We are a Catholic primary school for Year 1 to 8 learners, offering a rich, nurturing environment where every child is known and valued. With dedicated staff, strong teaching, and after-school care, we support each child’s growth in faith, learning, and wellbeing.
Our community is wonderfully diverse, and we honour and celebrate the unique cultures, languages, and identities that make us who we are.
As tumuaki, I see myself as a kaitiaki – a guardian of our kura. My role is to protect what matters most: our land, our history, our faith, and our people. I carry with me the whakataukī: "Kia whakatōmuri te haere whakamua" – I walk backwards into the future with my eyes on the past. It reminds me to lead with strength, grounded in identity and ancestry.
At the heart of our school is The Holy Cross WAY, built on three core values:
Whānau – Be Inclusive
Aroha – Be Kind
YES! – Be Brave and Take Risks
These values guide how we live, learn, and grow together. We regularly ask our ākonga and staff:
Are we including others? Are we being kind? Are we being brave?
These are the same values Jesus lived out — he welcomed all, showed deep compassion, and led with courage. We invite you to come and experience that spirit here at Holy Cross.
“Let all that you do be done in love.”
– 1 Corinthians 16:14
We’d love to welcome you into our whānau.

Kia ora e te whānau,
It is with immense sadness that we share with you that Brenda O’Hare’s beloved youngest son, Liam, died on Sunday morning. Brenda is currently in Melbourne with her husband Noel and her sons, Dominic and Daniel, as they support one another through this heartbreaking time. This morning, our staff gathered together in prayer to hold the O’Hare whānau close. It was an emotional time for us all, and we continue to feel deeply saddened by this loss.
As news of Liam’s death has begun to spread amongst staff and members of our community, this morning we made the decision to share this news directly and sensitively with our students. We felt it was important that they hear this from the school in a caring and supportive way, rather than through casual conversations. We also wanted to help those students, who work closely with Brenda, understand why she will be away from school.
At Holy Cross, we do not shy away from conversations about death and grief. Instead, we approach them with grace, compassion, empathy, and understanding, recognising that these moments are part of life and community.
What this may mean for your child at home
Your child may or may not wish to talk about Liam’s death when they come home today. If they do, we encourage you to listen openly and gently support them with any questions or feelings they may have. Children process grief in different ways, and often simply being heard is enough.
As always, if you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to come and see me.
Please continue to keep Brenda and the O’Hare whānau in your prayers during this difficult time.
Ngā mihi nui,
Tala Moemai
Principal
