Tuakana Āwhina - Peer Support in the Playground

Part of our Senior Leadership Programme – Tuakana Āwhina is a uniquely designed initiative that fosters a safe and caring playground environment. Four senior students, working in pairs, are rostered on each break wearing pink vests for easy visibility. Their role is to provide guidance, promote positive interactions, and help resolve minor issues.

Tuakana Āwhina carry notebooks to record positive behaviour and may give out up to two ‘lumen’ slips per break. They are encouraged to seek support from duty teachers when needed. The programme incorporates the Zones of Regulation, as well as calming spaces such as the prayer room. It reflects our Catholic values alongside the principles of te ao Māori, including manaakitanga, tuakana–teina, and awhinatanga, helping students grow into kind and confident leaders.
